OFF THE SHELF: Alderweireld comeback is on

    Published: 8 December, 2016

SPURS are set to welcome back talismanic defender Toby Alderweireld for Sunday’s trip to Manchester United.

The Belgium international, who has been out for seven weeks with a knee injury, was back in full training this week and manager Mauricio Pochettino is set to select him alongside Jan Vertonghen.

Alderweireld is in talks with the club over a new contract, despite the fact that his current deal runs until 2019 with the option for an extra year.

Meanwhile, fears over the continuing absence of Erik Lamela due to a hip injury have finally been explained. Pochettino said the winger is well on the road to recovery, and is back in Argentina paying a visit to his brother, who is unwell.

And Tottenham are tracking Norwich City winger Jacob Murphy and could tempt the Canaries with a January deal which sees him loaned back to the Championship club. Murphy has been an ever-present for Norwich this season and Spurs’ scouts have lodged positive reports about his work-rate, attitude and eye for goal.

Other rumours ahead of the January transfer window have seen Spurs linked with Manchester United’s out-of-favour midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

Pochettino had tracked the former Southampton player and made a series of offers for him before United stepped in to seal a deal. Schneiderlin has, however, fallen down the pecking order under boss Jose Mourinho and now the Lilywhites are said to be readying a cut-price bid to end his Old Trafford nightmare.
