A DELIGHTFUL series of four baroque music concerts is being performed at Burgh House, Hampstead, over the next few weeks by the Arcata Baroque trio led by Muswell Hill soprano Elin Harries.
Their series starts this Sunday with English songs and cantatas by Purcell and Carey, Hayes and Pepusch. The threesome are joined by flautist Laura Piras for their February 3 concert.
• Patrick Allies’ new singing classes are taking place on Friday mornings at Burgh House.
• The eagerly-awaited second album recorded by Sam Leak’s Aquarium quartet is being launched at a Kings Place gig this Saturday evening. Their debut album received critical acclaim on its summer 2011 launch. An extensive tour follows the album release.
• Wonderful pianist Angela Hewitt is performing Beethoven concertos at the Barbican next Wednesday with the Britten Sinfonia. She’s playing his youthful second and the intimate and serene fourth.
• Legendary jazz/funk guitarist is Carl Orr is playing at the Princess of Wales, Primrose Hill, this Sunday lunchtime with the Pete Chapman Trio.
A consistent Nichiren Buddhist since 1984, he’s strong on picking up pearls from other people. Among his favourite musician quotes are Herbie Hancock’s “Being a musician is what I do, but it’s not what I am.” And Jimi Hendrix: “Knowledge speaks but Wisdom listens.” And Dizzy Gillespie: “It’s taken me all my life to learn what not to play.”
