SIX fighters from Islington boxing club ignited their 2017 campaign on Saturday when they stepped between the ropes in east London for the Fight For Peace and West Ham Boys ABC joint open show.
Among the boxers returning to the ring for the Upper Holloway-based club was Jiyan Oguz, who took on Bradley Stone in the 58kg division. Jiyan showed a good range of clean combinations as he punched his way to a unanimous victory after three two-minute rounds.
Lightweight Jerome Campbell also looked in a confident mood as he gained a unanimous win over West Ham’s Alfie Haven. But the margins proved unfavourable for club-mate Yaser Al-Ghena, who lost via a unanimous decision in his 70kg contest against Myles Cousins.
One of the most exciting fights of the night saw Islington welterweight Inder Bassi take on former Commonwealth Games challenger Jonathan Francois, who was recently named as one of the best amateur boxers in the division in England.
Inder boxed well behind his long jab for the first two rounds, and despite an accidental clash of heads in the third which opened up a cut over his left eye, went on to claim an impressive unanimous victory.
The night of top action also saw Sunni Torgman make a winning debut in the 57kg division, while junior prospect Patrick McDonagh, 11, showed off his talents in a special skills contest in the 38kg division.
Meanwhile a mixture of Islington’s young infant and junior prospects visited the newly-built Lion ABC gym in Pitfield Street, Shoreditch, earlier this month to train and spar against other children from the host club, Dagenham ABC, West Ham Boys ABC and Browns Boxing Academy, who were visiting from Malta.
Islington club manager Reggie Hagland said afterwards: “The kids and the coaches were very excited about the event, they all put up a good performance with many of them taking part in sparring for the first time outside of our home gym.
“They all gained valuable experience which will hopefully build them up for the future.”
