THEY’VE got beards, they are from Clapton in east London and they are selling craft beers – but William Jack and Tom McKin, proprietors of Kentish Town’s latest beer outlet, look confused when asked if they are hipsters.

“We simply like good beer,” says Will, who yesterday (Wednesday) hosted an opening drinks party at the Clapton Craft beer shop in Kentish Town Road.

The shelves are packed with craft beer and a draught system allows customers to buy take-out jars. The shop is the latest addition to a burgeoning NW5 beer and real ale scene.

The pair, originally from New Zealand, moved to east London six years ago. They have a background in the wine industry but became increasingly interested in the wide range of quality beers being brewed.

“We knew good beer was produced and we thought it was viable as a stand-alone business,” says Tom.

They opened a branch in Lower Clapton Road in Hackney 18 months ago and, because of its success, began looking for other premises. Will says: “We wanted to take it somewhere else. We have been to Kentish Town to drink good beer – there is the Southampton Arms, The Rose and Crown and Camden Town Brewery – so it felt a  good fit. Kentish Town has a foodie and boozy aspect to it.”
